THURSDAY WINE TASTING: 7/24/2008

SOUTH TRAIL LIQUORS
FINE WINE CELLAR AND CIGAR HUMIDOR
7310 South Tamiami Trail, across from Mattison's Restaurant.
927-WINE(9463)
5:00pm until 7:00pm

2005 MURPHY-GOODE FUME BLANC, SONOMA
Fumé Blanc has been a bright star in Murphy-Goode's portfolio since 1985, their first vintage. Superior fruit and minimal handling are the keys to our success. Here is a mouthful of refreshing fruit flavors - citrus, nectarines and white peaches - with an aromatic hint of lemongrass. A blending component of Sauvignon Musqué adds floral components and rounds the wine's texture. Murphy-Goode Fumé Blanc is an appealing and popular wine with appetizers, salads, grilled chicken or fish, light sauces and lighter dishes in general. The wine's succulent fruit and good acidity complement fresh seafood, particularly shellfish.

2006 IRON HORSE VIOGNIER, ALEXANDER VALLEY
92 points, Wine Enthusiast
Iron Horse has one of the most consistent Viognier records in California, with a style all their own. From their mountain vineyard in Alexander Valley, the '06 shows tremendous balance, with an exciting tension between dry, minerally acidity and Viognier's exotic fruit and wildflower flavors. The wine was stainless-steel fermented and did not undergo malolactic fermentation, which helps account for the cleanliness.
S.H. (11/1/2007)

2006 SILVERADO CHARDONNAY, NAPA
All the grapes for this blend are estate grown. Average harvest sugar was 22.5 Brix. The blend was fermented in oak barrels and aged in barrel for 5 months. Oak profile: 23% new French oak, overall blend 89% French oak and 9% American. 23 percent of the blend completed malolactic fermentation. Tasting Notes: Bright clear yellow color. Ripe yellow apple, pear, citrus and mineral aromas. Medium body, silky texture with citrus zest on finish.

2004 HESS ALLOMI CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA
90 points, Wine Enthusiast
It is hard to believe that 41,000 cases of this wine were produced because it's so good. Few other wineries could rise to this level at this production. Rich and dry in ripe cherry jam, blackberry pie, cassis, blueberry, smoky oak and spice flavors, it's a complex young wine that approximates the best of Napa Valley. — S.H. (5/1/2007)

2005 GIRARD PETITE SIRAH, NAPA
92 points, Wine Enthusiast
Brings a boutique touch to this often rustic variety, with a classic structure, although no Petite Sirah can ever quite escape its brawny bulk. Nor should it want to. Blackberries, black currants, loganberries, plums, cherries, dark unsweetened chocolate, leather, coffee, violets - they all come together in this dry, fresh young wine. Will easily hold for a decade or two, gradually getting softer and sweeter.
Wine Enthusiast, October 2007

Growing Green Kids at the YMCA: 7/24/2008

The Sarasota Family YMCA has gone green! This summer, the association will launch its premiere day camp – Camp Go Green – for campers ages 7-12 years old. This camp is based on the YMCA’s iCARE curriculum, which provides your child a unique education in caring for the world we live in.

The YMCA’s mission has always been about helping people to develop their fullest potential; iCARE is grounded on the belief that environmental awareness is a key component of health in spirit, mind and body – the YMCA’s three focuses. Through interactive games, recyclable reusable art and power plays, campers will have a once-in-a-lifetime experience to make a difference in their community this summer and have a great time.

Camp Go Green! is offered June 9-August 8, 2008 at Gulf Gate Elementary School. The summer program is divided into four consecutive 2-week sessions (June 9-August 1) and one 1-week session (August 4-8). Two-week sessions are $350 each and $175 for the one-week session. Summer Wine Promotion at Hyatt Regency Sarasota: 7/24/2008

HYATT'S NEW CURRENTS RESTAURANT AND CANVAS WINE
ARE THE PERFECT SUMMER PAIRING
Buy Two Entrees, Receive Complimentary Bottle of Hyatt's Signature Wine

Hyatt Regency Sarasota is offering a palate pleasing deal this summer, allowing guests to experience a complimentary bottle of the exquisitely crafted Canvas wine while enjoying the fresh Floribbean tastes of the new Currents restaurant. Guests who purchase two or more entrees will receive a bottle of Canvas wine, Hyatt's signature brand, completely free of charge.
Canvas was created in partnership with Folio Fine Wine Partners, a Napa Valley, Calif.-based company owned by the Michael Mondavi family.
“We're pleased to offer the finely crafted Canvas line to compliment the fresh and Caribbean inspired menu at Currents,” said Executive Chef Aaron Chavarria.
Canvas represents the ‘art of living,' and refers to the artisan approach taken when developing the wine. Varietals include:

* Cabernet Sauvignon - The 2004 vintage offers lush aromas of ripe, fruit-forward flavors of black cherry, blackberry and cassis layered with nuances of cigar box and tobacco.
* Chardonnay – The 2005 vintage greets the nose with lovely apple blossom and honeysuckle aromatics.
* Merlot – The 2005 vintage is a wonderful balance of pure Merlot fruit and subtle toasty spice combined with rich, ripe tannins that give this wine elegance in the glass.

2nd Annual Dog & Cat Days of Summer Campaign for The Humane Society of Sarasota County: 7/24/2008

The Humane Society of Sarasota County, HSSC, is in need of support NOW more than ever. Dr. Deborah Goldsmith of Goldsmith Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center will be teaming up with The Humane Society of Sarasota to host the Dog & Cat Days of Summer. This event will take place in conjunction with Goldsmith's annual Open House on Saturday, July 26th where the HSSC's brand new Mobile Adoption Van will be available for pet adoption at her center. That whole week the HSSC will be here with pets talking about hurricane readiness and the importance of spaying and neutering your pets. Dr. Goldsmith says. This year especially all these poor animals are being left behind when people have to foreclose on their homes and move to rentals that don't accept pets. We need to make more people aware of what's going on. The Humane Society of Sarasota County's Events/Donor Relations Manager, Cherie Morgan, says, I hope that all animal lovers reading this will be encouraged by Dr. Goldsmith's efforts and generosity. I can tell you that there are about 320 wet noses and wagging tails at the shelter right now that surely will! If anyone has ever considered seeing a chiropractor/acupuncturist, there is no finer time to do it, help yourself and help the animals! Dr. Goldsmith would like to offer all new patients a chance to donate $25* between July 22nd through 25th for their first day of services with an exam, a consultation and a report of findings. All proceeds of this event will go to the HSSC. Dr. Goldsmith says The staff and patients enjoy teaming up to give something back to our community. I love having this opportunity to give our time and talents to our patients in exchange for donations to this wonderful local organization. You don't have to wait to donate your time or money to your local Humane Society of Sarasota.

It's Not Easy Being Green at The Tampa Museum of Art : 7/24/2008

In late March of this year, artists, designers, architects, and developers interested in making a positive difference in both their lives and their communities were invited to submit design schemes, art works, or commercial products that provided real solutions for people to live better, healthier lives with less impact on the environment for display in It’s Not Easy Being Green. The resulting exhibition showcases not only conceptual drawings and sketches, but actual artwork and design products that offer community members information, ideas, solutions, and motivation to live a sustainable lifestyle.

The exhibition is divided into three subdivisions. The first portion explores urban design issues such as housing, energy, transportation, and land use, while the second section exhibits environmentally friendly products ranging from custom eco furniture to commercial objects made from recycled/salvaged materials. The final section features fine art created by artists who address issues of sustainability, activism and/or environmental concerns in their work.

Phantasmagoria: Specters of Absence at the Ringling Museum: 7/24/2008

The mysterious world of fog and smoke evokes a dreamlike state inviting the viewer to suspend the harshness of reality for some otherworldly space. This show explores how artists are currently working not only in this medium for the purpose of inviting others to engage with their creations. Combined with the mystical atmosphere is also the play of light and shadow. Artists include Christian Boltanski, Regina Silveira and Jim Campbell. An international roster of artists makes for an impressive, though intimate exhibition.

This exhibition is included with regular Museum admission.
